'I didn’t like it either' - Xabi Alonso defends rotation as Vinicius Junior’s frustration grows at Real Madrid

Vinicius Júnior’s frustration at his limited game time under new Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is growing as the Brazilian forward continues to be rotated despite the team’s flawless start to the season.

The 25-year-old, a decisive scorer in the club’s Champions League triumphs of 2022 and 2024, has yet to complete a full 90 minutes this campaign, a situation that is dominating Spanish sports headlines.

Vinicius, who also has Cameroonian heritage, has been substituted in 10 of the 12 matches since Alonso succeeded Carlo Ancelotti in June.

He started on the bench in the remaining two games, including last week’s Champions League opener against Olympique de Marseille, adding to the sense of puzzlement around his usage.

Saturday’s LaLiga clash with Espanyol captured the tension perfectly. The winger tormented the defence down the left flank, assisted Kylian Mbappé’s goal and struck the post in one of his best performances of the season, yet Alonso still replaced him in the second half.

Vinicius left the pitch visibly frustrated, his gestures caught on television cameras and widely circulated on social media.

The statistics underline the controversy: despite being the second most involved Real Madrid player in goals this term, Vinicius ranks only 10th in minutes played.

Pressed about his rotation strategy on Monday, Alonso acknowledged the forward’s displeasure but defended his approach.

“I was a player myself and when I was substituted, I didn’t like it either. I don’t think it’s a big deal that the players show their frustration,” he told reporters ahead of Tuesday’s LaLiga match against Levante.

“I’m happy with what Vinicius is doing, it is still early in the season. We need everyone, I’m happy and we can do better in the last third,” Alonso added.

Real Madrid remain top of the table on 15 points after five matches, two clear of Barcelona.
