Saudi Arabia head coach Hervé Renard has reflected on his spell as Morocco’s national team boss, describing the period between 2016 and 2019 as one of the most significant chapters of his coaching career.
In an interview with Jeune Afrique, the French tactician said his time in charge of the Atlas Lions came at a turning point in his professional journey, following a challenging stint with Lille.
“When I went to coach Morocco, I had just come out of a difficult period with Lille,” Renard explained. “Today I can say that 90% of the experience was positive, and there are many lessons worth keeping.”
Renard paid tribute to Morocco FA president Fouzi Lekjaa, who was elected in 2014, crediting him with transforming the country’s football landscape.
“Lekjaa worked hard to provide excellent infrastructure and create a highly professional environment,” Renard noted.
The 56-year-old also highlighted his contribution to the resurgence of the national team, which qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup — Morocco’s first appearance at the tournament since 1998.
“I helped re-energize the squad and contributed to the emergence of players like Achraf Hakimi and Youssef En-Nesyri, among others.”
“Today Morocco is ranked among the top ten to fifteen teams in the world, and I am proud to have been part of that project,” he beamed.
Renard also explained why he declined the opportunity to take over the Senegal national team following Aliou Cissé’s exit in 2023, despite admitting the role was tempting.
“Not all the conditions were in place in Senegal, but I was tempted by the challenge,” he admitted.
“If a well-organized federation presents a strong sporting project, it could interest me. Money is not the main factor, it never has been.”
“Africa is close to my heart. I feel at home there, and I will return one day.”
He concluded by reaffirming his strong connection to the continent.
“I feel comfortable in Africa, and I will return one day,” he said.
