Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed has urged stakeholders involved in preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to prioritise long-term impact over short-term gains, stressing that the tournament must leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

Kenya, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, is co-hosting the expanded Africa Cup of Nations 2027 under the Pamoja bid, with preparations already underway across infrastructure, logistics and football development programmes.

Hussein Mohammed said the real measure of success will not only be the smooth staging of the tournament, but what remains after the final whistle in 2027.

“What happens after 2027 will define us. The legacy we leave behind for future generations will be critical,” he said.

He further called for collective effort and discipline from all stakeholders, insisting that the scale of the assignment demands personal and institutional commitment beyond routine expectations.

“This requires sacrifice, longer hours and commitment beyond personal interests,” he added.

His remarks come as East Africa intensifies preparations for its first-ever joint hosting of Africa’s premier football competition, with attention increasingly turning to stadium readiness, operational planning and youth football development initiatives that are expected to benefit from the tournament’s legacy framework.
