Hull City, recently promoted to the Premier League, is set for a rebranding as the club’s owner, the Egyptian businessman Assem Allam, decides to rename it to Hull City Tigers. Allam expressed his dissatisfaction with the commonality of the name “City” and a desire to stand out from other clubs with similar names like Leicester City and Manchester City.
“In business, the shorter the name, the better. It can spread more quickly,” Allam stated, suggesting a marketing strategy behind the change. However, this decision has not been well-received by many Hull City fans, who have strong connections to the traditional name.
Bernard Noble of the official Hull supporters group expressed his intent to continue using the original name, saying, “I will always say ‘I’m going to see a Hull match’, ‘I’m going to see the Tigers’, ‘I’m going to see Hull.'” The rebranding has sparked discussions among fans about the significance of preserving the club’s identity and tradition amidst changes imposed from the top.
