Hugo Broos fumes over Themba Zwane’s three-match ban as South Africa lodge appeal
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has expressed his anger and disappointment after learning that midfielder Themba Zwane has been handed a three-match suspension following his red card against Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision came as a major blow to Bafana Bafana, who are battling to keep their hopes of progressing from Group A alive. Earlier reports had suggested Zwane would serve only a one-match suspension, but FIFA has now confirmed a three-game ban.
The punishment effectively brings Zwane’s World Cup campaign to an abrupt end. The influential midfielder will miss South Africa’s crucial clash against Czech as well as the final group-stage encounter against South Korea. Should Bafana Bafana fail to progress to the knockout rounds, Zwane will not play again at the tournament.
Broos did not hide his frustration when discussing the matter, revealing that South Africa intends to challenge the ruling.
The Belgian tactician believes the punishment is excessive and insists the incident did not warrant a straight red card in the first place.
“I’m a little bit frustrated that Themba Zwane got a three-match suspension. We will appeal it because our situation is very clear. If we don’t win tomorrow, we could be playing our final group match with nothing to fight for, and that’s something we must avoid,” Broos said.
The South African coach argued that the challenge involving Zwane and a Mexican player was misinterpreted by match officials.
According to Broos, Zwane was simply attempting to move past his opponent after being blocked and did not commit an offence worthy of such a severe punishment.
He also pointed to what he viewed as inconsistencies in refereeing decisions at the tournament, comparing the incident to another high-profile case involving Argentine superstar Lionel Messi.
Broos maintained that while he would not want to see top players removed from matches unnecessarily, he believes fairness and consistency should apply across all teams and players.
The suspension leaves South Africa without one of their most experienced and creative players at a critical stage of the competition. Zwane has long been a key figure for Bafana Bafana, providing leadership, composure and attacking inspiration in the final third.
His absence will force Broos to reshuffle his midfield plans ahead of the must-win encounter against Czech, with South Africa knowing that anything less than victory could leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
As the appeal process gets underway, Bafana Bafana will be hoping for a favourable outcome, although time is running out before their next decisive Group A fixture.
