South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, under the guidance of Belgian coach Hugo Broos, experienced a thrilling journey in AFCON 2023, capturing the imagination of fans before narrowly missing out on a spot in the final.
Having displayed impressive performances throughout the tournament, Bafana Bafana now aims to secure at least the bronze medal as they prepare for a face-off against DR Congo this Saturday, February 10. Before the crucial clash, Coach Hugo Broos took a moment to reflect on his future with the team.
The surprise package of AFCON 2023, South Africa, progressed to the semi-finals with notable achievements, including four clean sheets in five matches.
Their remarkable run came to an end in a closely contested semi-final against Nigeria, culminating in a penalty shootout loss (1-1, tab 2-4). Despite the setback, Broos believes the team has a chance to conclude the tournament on a high note.
Appointed as the head of the South Africa national team on May 5, 2021, Broos successfully guided Bafana Bafana to AFCON 2023, reaching the semi-finals for the first time in 24 years.
When asked about his future with the team, Broos clarified, “First of all, I never said I had to stop – I never said it.”
While acknowledging discussions about his age, Broos expressed contentment in his role, emphasizing the satisfaction he derives from coaching the team.
“The guys give me a lot of satisfaction, a lot. I am proud, as a coach, to be the coach of this team. The rest, the future will tell us,” he concluded.
