Hossam Hassan backed on Egypt squad selection as former Zamalek star weighs in on World Cup goalkeeping battle

Former Zamalek midfielder Tamer Abdel Hamid “Dunga” has thrown his support behind Egypt’s technical team, insisting that squad selection for the World Cup remains the exclusive responsibility of head coach Hossam Hassan and his staff, while calling for stronger psychological and moral backing for players.

Speaking during an appearance on the Al-Mehwar Stadium programme, Abdel Hamid highlighted what he described as the coach’s recent efforts to support underperforming players, citing Mohamed Abdel Moneim, who he said was encouraged despite limited game time, as well as Imam Ashour during a dip in form.

He suggested, however, that striker Mostafa Mohamed deserved similar backing during difficult spells.

Turning his attention to the goalkeeping department, the former midfielder expressed confidence that Mostafa Shobeir is emerging as Egypt’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the World Cup, pointing to his recent performances as evidence of his growing status within the squad.

He also offered a prediction on the final squad cut, stating that Mohamed Alaa is the most likely goalkeeper to miss out when the final selection is made ahead of the tournament.

Egypt has been housed in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand and Iran.
