Hohoe United FC have been suspended for three seasons by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after withdrawing from the ongoing 2025/26 championship, in a decision announced on Friday.

The sanction, issued by the GFA’s disciplinary committee, bars the club from participating in the Ghana Premier League and all competitions organised by the governing body until the 2029/2030 season.

It follows the club’s decision to pull out midway through the current campaign, a move the association ruled to be a breach of its regulations.

According to the GFA, Hohoe United formally informed the federation on 1 April 2026 of their intention to withdraw from the league during the second half of the season.

The club subsequently failed to honour its remaining fixtures, effectively ending its participation in the competition.

The disciplinary committee determined that this action contravened Article 13 of the Ghana Premier League regulations, which governs club conduct and participation requirements.

As a result, the club was found guilty of misconduct, leading to one of the most severe sanctions available under the rules.

The ruling not only removes Hohoe United from top-flight football for an extended period but also excludes them from all GFA-organised competitions during the suspension.

This means the club will be unable to compete at any official level under the association’s jurisdiction until the ban is lifted.

In addition to the suspension, the GFA has taken steps affecting the playing staff.

The Player Status Committee has granted all registered players of Hohoe United free agent status, allowing them to sign with other clubs.

This decision ensures that players are not left without opportunities following the club’s withdrawal, although any moves remain subject to existing transfer conditions.

The disciplinary measures also include confirmation of the club’s relegation.

Once the suspension period ends, Hohoe United will not return directly to the top tier but will instead compete in the second regional division.

This level falls under the administration of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association, marking a significant step down in the football hierarchy.

Financial implications have also been imposed on the club.

The GFA has ordered Hohoe United to repay all forms of support received during the 2025/26 season.

This includes financial assistance as well as equipment provided by the association.

The governing body has made it clear that the suspension does not absolve the club of any outstanding financial responsibilities.

The combination of sporting and financial penalties reflects the seriousness with which the GFA views the withdrawal.

By acting unilaterally and failing to complete their fixtures, the club disrupted the competition, prompting a firm response from the authorities.

Despite the severity of the punishment, Hohoe United have the option to challenge the decision.

Under GFA statutes, the club has been given a three-day window from the date of notification to lodge an appeal with the appeals committee.

Any such appeal would be considered in accordance with the association’s established procedures.

The case highlights the regulatory framework governing professional football in Ghana, where clubs are expected to fulfil their commitments throughout the season.

Withdrawal from a competition, particularly without mutual agreement, is treated as a serious offence with significant consequences.

For Hohoe United, the decision marks a major setback that will affect both the club’s competitive standing and its organisational future.

A three-season absence from official competitions represents a substantial period in which the club will be unable to operate at the highest levels of the domestic game.

The release of players, confirmation of relegation, and requirement to repay financial support collectively underline the breadth of the sanctions imposed.

Together, they signal the GFA’s intent to enforce its regulations and maintain the integrity of its competitions.

While the possibility of an appeal remains, the immediate effect of the ruling is clear: Hohoe United are excluded from Ghanaian top-flight football for the foreseeable future, with their return set to begin from a significantly lower tier once the suspension is served.
