Declan Rice has thrown his support behind Arsenal’s new signing Noni Madueke, saying the winger will surprise doubters and make a major impact next season.
Madueke, who has Nigerian heritage, joined Arsenal in a £52 million move from Chelsea in one of the more contentious deals of the summer.
The 23-year-old’s transfer sparked backlash from a section of Arsenal fans, with over 5,000 supporters signing a #NoToMadueke petition expressing concern over the club’s growing habit of signing players discarded by rivals.
Despite the criticism, Rice believes the Gunners have landed a driven and talented player who will silence his critics.
“I know how driven he is. I’ve spoken to him and you’re going to see what he’s about this season,” said the England midfielder. “He’s hungry, he wants to play for Arsenal and that’s the type of players we want.”
Rice added: “He’s going to shock a lot of people and I can’t wait for him to come. People have been speaking internally — the players, the staff. We know the player that we’re getting.”
The Arsenal vice-captain also praised Madueke’s personality and commitment, qualities he observed while on international duty.
“I met him as a person with England and was blown away by his personality and character… He really cares about his football, has really high demands.”
Madueke is expected to join the squad for their pre-season tour after recovering from a minor knock.
