Hervé Renard Eyes South Africa Job Following Sochaux Exit
Former Zambia and Sochaux manager Hervé Renard has thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant South Africa national team coaching job, expressing strong interest in taking over the Bafana Bafana.
Renard, who led Zambia to a historic Africa Cup of Nations title in 2012, is currently without a club after parting ways with Sochaux at the end of the season. Despite his successful resume, the Frenchman has yet to attract significant interest, prompting him to remain open to new opportunities—particularly in Africa, where he has built much of his managerial reputation.
Speaking to South African publication KickOff, Renard made his intentions clear. “Of course I’m interested,” he said. “I know South Africa very well, and it’s an interesting challenge. But I’m sure SAFA will receive a lot of applications, so there’s still time.”
The South African Football Association (SAFA) officially announced earlier this week that Gordon Igesund would not continue as national team coach following the expiration of his contract. The search is now on for a replacement to guide Bafana Bafana into a new era.
Renard, known for his tactical discipline and ability to inspire underdog teams, said there had been no formal contact with SAFA yet. “No discussions yet,” he added. “They have just broken up with Gordon Igesund, and I don’t think there is any need to rush into anything. We’ll see what happens.”
The 45-year-old coach’s familiarity with African football, including stints in Angola and with the Zambian and Ivorian national teams, could give him an edge. However, reports suggest that SAFA may also be eyeing Nigeria’s Stephen Keshi, who is currently leading the Super Eagles at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, as a potential high-profile appointment.
Renard’s interest underscores his desire to remain active on the international stage. His previous success with Zambia has earned him respect across the continent, and his calm, confident approach could appeal to a South African setup in search of stability and renewed ambition.
With no official shortlist released yet, the race for the Bafana Bafana job remains open. But one thing is clear—Hervé Renard is ready and waiting.
