Burkina Faso’s national football team faces a significant challenge as they prepare for the third and fourth rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers without their first-choice goalkeeper, Hervé Koffi. The experienced shot-stopper has been ruled out due to a knee injury.

Coach Duarte Confirms Koffi’s Injury

Head coach Paulo Duarte confirmed the setback, revealing that Koffi had undergone medical examinations that confirmed his inability to participate.

“I spoke with Hervé Koffi. He told me that he had consultations and x-rays and his knee doesn’t feel very good.

I simply asked him to send me supporting documents. Medical analyses and a medical certificate to prove orally that he is injured and will not be able to travel,” Duarte stated.

Salifou Coulibaly to Replace Koffi

In light of Koffi’s injury, Duarte has called up Lampè Salifou Coulibaly, the goalkeeper for Salitas FC, to fill the void.

While Coulibaly brings his own set of skills to the squad, the starting role for the crucial matches against Egypt and Sierra Leone will be taken by Brama Traoré.

Traoré, who has been training with the team in Morocco, now faces the task of stepping up in Koffi’s absence.

Impact of Koffi’s Absence

Koffi’s absence is a substantial blow to the Stallions. Known for his experience and reliability, Koffi has been a cornerstone of the Burkinabè defense.

His leadership and shot-stopping ability will be missed, putting added pressure on Traoré, who, while promising, lacks extensive international experience.

This situation will test the resilience and unity of the Burkina Faso squad as they aim to secure crucial points in their quest for World Cup qualification.

Upcoming Matches

The Stallions’ first challenge comes on June 6, when they travel to face the Pharaohs of Egypt, a team known for its formidable home advantage and rich footballing history.

Four days later, on June 10, Burkina Faso will host Sierra Leone, hoping to capitalize on home ground support and secure a victory.

Conclusion

As Burkina Faso prepares for these vital fixtures, the team will need to demonstrate solidarity and adaptability in the face of adversity.

The absence of Hervé Koffi is undoubtedly a setback, but it also presents an opportunity for players like Brama Traoré and Salifou Coulibaly to rise to the occasion.

The coming matches will be a test of the Stallions’ depth and determination as they continue their journey towards the 2026 World Cup.
