Philip Otele substituted at halftime in Hamburg draw with Augsburg

Hamburg coach Merlin Polzin has clarified that the halftime substitution of Nigerian winger Philip Otele in the 1-1 draw against Augsburg was purely tactical and not related to injury.

The decision drew attention after Otele, who started the match, was replaced at the break following a challenging first half for the German side. Hamburg went into halftime trailing 1-0, with the winger having missed a key opportunity to equalise in the 39th minute.

Otele, 25, did not return for the second half, with Rayan Philippe introduced in his place as Hamburg sought to respond to the deficit.

The change prompted questions after the match, particularly regarding whether the substitution had been forced by a physical issue.

Speaking afterwards, Polzin dismissed any suggestion of injury and made clear the reasoning behind his decision. “No, he wasn’t injured. It’s always about improving our game,” Polzin clarified.

The coach pointed to broader issues in Hamburg’s attacking structure during the opening 45 minutes, indicating that the team had struggled to impose themselves effectively against Augsburg’s defensive setup.

According to Polzin, the lack of penetration and movement in advanced areas had limited their ability to create meaningful chances.

“In the first half, we weren’t happy with our play because it caused us problems with depth and repeated runs behind the opposition’s line. We needed those runs to become dangerous or to create space in the gaps,” he explained.

The halftime adjustment was therefore designed to reshape Hamburg’s attacking approach and provide greater dynamism. By introducing fresh energy and a different profile in attack, the coach aimed to break through Augsburg’s defensive block and improve the team’s overall balance.

Polzin added that the changes brought a noticeable improvement, stating that his side became “significantly more dynamic with Jatta,” underlining the intended impact of the tactical shift.

While the match ultimately ended level, the coach’s explanation highlighted a decision rooted in strategy rather than circumstance, as Hamburg sought to adapt their approach in pursuit of a better result.
