Hamburg boss hints at Terem Moffi move as striker hunt gathers pace

Hamburger SV head coach Merlin Polzin has dropped the clearest indication yet that the Bundesliga newcomers remain in the market for another striker, with Nigeria international Terem Moffi emerging as one of the club’s leading targets.

The German side are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, and Moffi has been identified as a potential addition to bolster an attack that has already been reinforced with the signing of Zambia international Patson Daka.

Speaking about the club’s search for a forward, Polzin suggested further movement was inevitable.

“Something will definitely happen.”

His comments come as reports from Germany link the 26-year-old OGC Nice striker with a move to Hamburg, where the club are keen to add more firepower before the transfer window closes.

Moffi among Hamburg’s targets

Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa confirmed that Moffi is one of the players under consideration, while stressing that negotiations have not yet reached an advanced stage.

“We are familiar with both players. They are on the list of players we are looking at. It’s not as if the deals are imminent, however.”

Costa’s remarks also referred to Leeds United defender Sebastian Bornauw, another player linked with the club as Hamburg continue their recruitment drive.

For Moffi, the interest could provide an opportunity for a fresh start after an underwhelming loan spell at Porto. The Nigerian forward remains under contract with Nice but is due to become a free agent next summer if no agreement is reached over his future.

Fresh start on the horizon

Moffi has established himself as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished forwards in recent years, enjoying productive spells in Ligue 1 before injuries and limited opportunities slowed his progress.

Hamburg believe the experienced striker could add quality, physical presence and proven goalscoring ability as they prepare for life back in the Bundesliga.

While Costa insisted a deal is not close, Polzin’s confidence that another striker will arrive suggests Hamburg are pressing ahead with plans to strengthen their frontline.

Whether that player turns out to be Moffi remains to be seen, but the Nigerian is firmly on the club’s shortlist as they continue shaping their squad for the upcoming campaign.
