Marseille turmoil leaves Habib Beye increasingly isolated
Marseille head coach Habib Beye is coming under increasing pressure as the club’s difficult season continues to unravel, with results, dressing room tensions and growing criticism all adding to an unstable situation at the French side.
Despite a narrow victory at Le Havre, Beye’s position appears increasingly fragile as Marseille struggle to find consistency on and off the pitch.
The former club captain has alternated between reshuffling his squad, delivering firm messages and attempting to calm internal tensions, but results have continued to fall short of expectations.
Marseille’s decline has been reflected in the league table. After sitting in a stronger position earlier in the campaign, the club have dropped to sixth place, now trailing European qualification rivals and seeing their Champions League ambitions fade.
A penalty shootout exit in the Coupe de France against Toulouse has only intensified the disappointment surrounding the season.
Beyond results, reports have suggested growing unease within the dressing room. According to leaks reported by La Provence, sections of the squad are said to have questioned aspects of Beye’s management style, with some players even seeking opinions about him before his arrival.
One of the most notable examples of internal tension has involved midfielder Himad Abdelli, who has been left out of recent selections.
Beye has publicly linked the player to wider team issues, although the situation has added to speculation about divisions within the squad.
Communication from the Marseille coach has also become more defensive as pressure has increased. While initially open and detailed in press conferences, Beye has recently adopted a sharper tone, particularly ahead of the match against Nice.
“By adopting this approach, I’m not addressing the players, but the context. When I speak, I explain too much. When I describe, I describe too much. People say I’m misleading you when I go into detail.”
He has also voiced frustration over media reports and leaks from within the club.
“Today, lies are being made public about Habib Beye (…) The problem we have today is that we’ve entered a race for information – for bad information and lies – which is no longer verified at all.”
The situation was further highlighted after the victory over Le Havre, when Beye addressed speculation around player availability, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s absence following disciplinary issues during a training camp.
As pressure continues to mount, Beye finds himself increasingly isolated, with both results and internal dynamics placing his short tenure at Marseille under serious scrutiny.
