Returning to Guinean soil following their remarkable journey in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where they reached the quarter-finals for the first time, the Syli National of Guinea received commendations from the President of the Republic, Mamadi Doumbouya.
Despite falling short in the quarter-finals against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Guinean national team demonstrated resilience and promise throughout the tournament.
Facing a well-organized and defensively sturdy DRC collective, the Syli National succumbed to a 1-3 defeat at the Stade Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpé, highlighting the team’s youthfulness and the potential for future success.
In recognition of their historic achievement, President Mamadi Doumbouya extended his congratulations to Kaba Diawara and his team during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace upon the return of the national flag.
The president expressed pride in the dedication of the players, coach, and staff, stating, “Congratulations to our players, coach, and staff! We will come back even stronger.
Let us now learn lessons and prepare ourselves for the next challenges, notably AFCON 2025.”
President Doumbouya emphasized the importance of mobilizing positive energies to support and fortify the sports department in implementing a comprehensive development strategy for all sporting disciplines in the country.
Grateful for the Syli National’s representation on the international stage, the president concluded, “Thank you, Syli. Long live Syli.”
The Syli National, welcomed by thousands of supporters upon their arrival in Conakry, has witnessed a surge in popularity among the Guinean people following their impressive performance in AFCON 2023.
The team’s journey has not only left an indelible mark on the nation’s sporting history but has also set the stage for continued efforts to enhance representation and success in future tournaments, notably aiming for AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
