Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy made Champions League history on Tuesday night by breaking four records with a sensational hat-trick for Borussia Dortmund against Barcelona, despite his side crashing out of the competition.
Needing a miracle after a 4-0 defeat in the first leg, Dortmund produced a spirited fightback at Signal Iduna Park to win 3-1 in the quarter-final second leg.
But the German side fell short on aggregate, losing 5-3 overall as Barcelona progressed to the semi-finals.
Guirassy, however, stole the spotlight with a performance that etched his name into the record books.
The Guinea international, who has been one of Europe’s most prolific forwards this season, scored all three goals for Dortmund — converting a penalty in the 11th minute before adding two more in the 49th and 76th minutes.
While his efforts were not enough to reverse the deficit, the 28-year-old forward achieved a remarkable four Champions League records in a single night:
-
First Guinean player to score a Champions League hat-trick
-
Fastest African to reach 13 goals in a single UCL campaign
-
Most goals by a Borussia Dortmund player in a single Champions League season
-
Highest-scoring African in the 2024/25 Champions League (13 goals)
Guirassy now leads the Champions League scoring charts this season, surpassing stars such as Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.
The former Rennes and VfB Stuttgart striker, who has 22 caps and 9 goals for Guinea, continues to defy expectations with his late-career rise to prominence.
His performances have drawn interest from top European clubs, with several Premier League sides reportedly monitoring his progress.
Despite the disappointment of elimination, Guirassy’s heroics have earned widespread praise across Africa and beyond. For Guinean football fans, it was a moment of pride on one of the biggest stages in world football.
Dortmund’s European campaign may be over, but for Serhou Guirassy, the season still promises more headlines — and possibly more records.
