Borussia Dortmund progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Monterrey, thanks to a clinical double from Guinean forward Serhou Guirassy, who was named man of the match.
Guirassy wasted no time making his mark in Tuesday evening’s round of 16 clash, striking twice in the opening half to give the German side a commanding lead at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.
Both goals were expertly set up by Karim Adeyemi, whose precise deliveries allowed the former Stuttgart striker to display his instinctive finishing inside the box.
The first goal came in the 14th minute, when Guirassy latched onto a clever through ball to slot past Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada.
Just ten minutes later, he doubled Dortmund’s advantage, once again finding the net after a sharp interplay with Adeyemi down the right flank.
Though Monterrey managed to pull one back shortly after the break, Dortmund held firm for the remainder of the contest, absorbing waves of pressure from the Liga MX outfit.
The Mexican side enjoyed long spells of possession and created several promising chances, but a combination of wasteful finishing and resilient defending ensured Dortmund’s passage into the next round.
Guirassy’s performance was not only decisive on the scoresheet, but also vital in relieving pressure during crucial stages of the game.
His hold-up play and movement disrupted Monterrey’s back line, offering Dortmund a much-needed outlet during the Mexican club’s second-half resurgence.
“This is a big win for us,” Guirassy said after the match. “We knew Monterrey would be strong and very technical, but we stayed calm and focused. I’m happy to have helped the team and now we look ahead to the next round.”
The result keeps Dortmund’s hopes alive in the expanded Club World Cup format, where they now advance to face a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the quarter-finals.
For Guirassy, it was a standout evening that highlighted his continued rise in European football and his capacity to deliver on the global stage.
With the Guinean international in this kind of form, Dortmund’s ambitions in the tournament have suddenly become much more tangible.
