Abdoulaye Touré believes he has just delivered the best campaign of his professional career, as the Le Havre captain played a pivotal role in securing the club’s Ligue 1 survival on the final day of the season.
Touré’s coolly taken stoppage-time penalty against Strasbourg — a bold Panenka in the 99th minute — sealed Le Havre’s place in France’s top flight, capping a season in which the 31-year-old midfielder emerged as both a leader and standout performer.
Speaking to Foot Mercato, the Guinea international reflected on the defining moments of his season and acknowledged the personal growth that came with it.
“This is the best season of my career. Not just in terms of statistics, but in terms of volume of play, impact, and importance on a team level,” Touré said. “I think that between what I offered last season and this year, I’ve really fleshed out my game.”
Touré’s contribution extended far beyond the dramatic final match. Over the course of the season, he netted 10 goals — a personal best — including eight from the penalty spot, a figure bettered only by Premier League stars Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane.
His composure under pressure and ability to deliver in crucial moments made him an indispensable figure in Didier Digard’s squad.
He was quick to credit the role of his manager in his resurgence.
“Didier Digard gave me freedom. I had to repay the trust he gave me,” Touré said, acknowledging how the coach’s belief allowed him to thrive in an advanced role and dictate the rhythm of Le Havre’s midfield.
With his contract set to expire in June 2025 and no formal talks yet underway regarding an extension, Touré was candid about his future.
While he stopped short of confirming a departure, the midfielder hinted that his ambitions may lie beyond Le Havre.
“For the moment, there aren’t necessarily any discussions with the club,” he admitted. “The time will come for each party to sit down and discuss, and from then on, we’ll make the best possible decision.
Afterwards, it’s certain that for me, coming off a season like this, I have aspirations that are necessarily greater. Without disrespecting Le Havre, I obviously have desires elsewhere.”
At 31, Touré is entering the twilight of his career, but his performances this season suggest there is still plenty left to offer.
Whether his next challenge comes in Normandy or beyond, his late-career revival has ensured he will be a player to watch in the months ahead.
