Guinea, initially eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers after a 1-0 loss to Tanzania in the final group stage match, could still secure a place in the tournament. The West African nation has lodged a formal appeal with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), alleging Tanzania fielded an ineligible player during the match.
CAF has yet to announce a decision, but Guinea’s confidence remains high. Speaking to Africa Guinée, Guinea’s Minister of Sports expressed optimism about the appeal.
“For us, until proven otherwise, Guinea is not yet eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in 2025.
We believe the players have done the essential, and we expect a decision that is favorable to Guinea and to sport,” he stated.
The minister emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations, adding, “The rule of the game is the rule.”
Precedent Set in Similar Case
Guinea’s appeal gains credibility from a precedent set during the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.
The Democratic Republic of Congo successfully protested Mauritania’s use of Khadim Diaw, who had previously represented Senegal’s local team.
Mauritania was accused of failing to follow proper procedures for changing a player’s association, leading CAF to rule in DR Congo’s favor, awarding them the match result.
If a similar ruling is applied in Guinea’s case, Tanzania could face disqualification. Such a decision would see Guinea advance to the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Awaiting CAF’s Verdict
The situation remains uncertain, with both Guinea and Tanzania anxiously awaiting CAF’s verdict.
A ruling in Guinea’s favor would offer a dramatic turn of events, securing their qualification despite the on-field result.
While CAF deliberates, Guinea continues to rally behind its appeal, hopeful that regulations will be upheld to ensure fair competition.
The outcome of this case could have significant implications, not only for the two nations involved but also for the integrity of the qualification process.
