SENEGAL SPORTS AWARDS: SADIO MANÉ AND GORGUI DIENG SHINE IN 2013-2014 SEASON HONORS
As anticipated, the Senegalese sports press held its annual awards on Wednesday to honor the best athletes of the 2013-2014 season across four major categories. The results reflected the rising talents and achievements of Senegalese sports figures both locally and abroad.
🏆 Best Local Footballer
Ibrahima Diop of Jaraaf emerged victorious, having been the top scorer last season with 16 goals. He garnered 275 points, edging out Pape Sangoné Sarr (256 pts) and Adama Mbaye of AS Pikine (111 pts).
🌍 Senegal Ballon d’Or (Best Senegalese Footballer Abroad)
As proposed by Africa Top Sports (ATS), the title went to Sadio Mané of Southampton (Premier League), who amassed a commanding 397 points. He was followed by Dame Ndoye (Lokomotiv Moscow) and Demba Bâ (Beşiktaş), who collected 128 points.
🤼 Best Wrestler
Bombardier of Mbour, winner of the prestigious “King of the Arenas” bout, was named best wrestler with 306 points, ahead of crowd favorites Modou Lô (269 pts) and Ama Baldé (111 pts).
🥇 Best Sportsman of the Year
Unsurprisingly, the “mother” award for Best Sportsman went to Gorgui Sy Dieng, the NBA player with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He triumphed ahead of Saliou Diouf, African karate champion in the -60kg category, and Isabelle Sambou, a decorated African wrestling champion.
The ceremony, broadcast live by WAL Fadjri TV, brought together nearly 100 sports journalists from 42 of the 44 invited media outlets.
🎉 The official awards ceremony is scheduled for December 21, 2014, at the Grand Théâtre in Dakar.
