Gor Mahia have effectively conceded defeat in the race for the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title following a 1-1 draw against traditional rivals AFC Leopards in the 97th edition of the Mashemeji derby on Monday.
The stalemate at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay County leaves the record champions six points behind league leaders Police FC, with just two games left in the season.
Gor had hoped to narrow the gap on the table but were held after Brian Wanyama cancelled out Austin Odhiambo’s spectacular opener early in the second half.
The draw moved Gor Mahia to second place with 55 points, level with third-placed Tusker but still trailing Police, who sit at the summit with 61 points.
Acting coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has admitted the league chase is over and confirmed the club’s attention is now fixed on the upcoming FKF Cup final against Nairobi United.
“I don’t think there is another chance left for us as far as the league title is concerned… To be honest, we can’t talk about the league anymore,” Otieno told Flashscore.
Police FC can clinch their first-ever league title with a win over Shabana in their next fixture. Such a result would take them to 64 points, rendering Gor Mahia’s remaining matches academic—even if they defeat both Ulinzi Stars and Police in their final fixtures.
Meanwhile, frustration is mounting within the club’s hierarchy over fan misconduct. Gor Mahia official Sally Bolo criticised sections of the fan base for avoiding gate charges by bribing stewards, stating that such actions hurt the club’s finances and sustainability.
She called for greater accountability, saying: “Let’s stop cheating the badge we claim to love… Every ticket bought is a statement that you believe in Gor Mahia’s future.”
Gor Mahia remain the most decorated club in Kenyan football history with 21 league titles and 11 domestic cup triumphs.
