CAF Reveals 2014 African Player of the Year Finalists

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the five finalists for the prestigious 2014 African Player of the Year award. Leading the list is Yaya Touré, the Ivorian midfield powerhouse and three-time defending champion, who is aiming to win the award for a fourth consecutive time—a feat only achieved by Samuel Eto’o.

Touré is joined by a talented group of challengers:

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon – Borussia Dortmund)

  • Vincent Enyeama (Nigeria – Lille OSC)

  • Asamoah Gyan (Ghana – Al Ain)

  • Ahmed Musa (Nigeria – CSKA Moscow)

These five were selected from an initial list of 25 nominees.

CAF African Player of the Year (Based in Africa) Nominees

In the category for “African Player of the Year – Based in Africa,” CAF made a poignant gesture by including Senzo Meyiwa, the late South African goalkeeper tragically killed in October. The former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain joins a list of top performers from the continent:

  • Akram Djahnit (Algeria – ES Sétif)

  • El Hedi Belamieri (Algeria – ES Sétif)

  • Firmin Mubele Ndombe (DR Congo – AS Vita Club)

  • Fakhereddine Ben Youssef (Tunisia – CS Sfaxien)

The final shortlist of three candidates per category will be announced in December, and the winners will be crowned on January 8, 2015, at a ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria.
