Former Arsenal scout Gilles Grimandi has defended Ismaël Bennacer following the Algerian midfielder’s underwhelming start at Olympique de Marseille, expressing confidence that he will soon rediscover his best form.
Bennacer, who was named both Best Player and Best Young Player at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, has made five appearances for Marseille since joining the club.
During that time, the team has secured three wins and two draws. However, his performances have drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning whether he has fully regained his sharpness following a lengthy injury layoff.
Despite being heavily involved in Marseille’s build-up play, the 50-cap Algeria international has yet to fully showcase the dynamic ball-carrying ability that once made him a standout performer.
He often opts for quick, simple passes rather than driving forward with the ball—one of his greatest strengths. However, Grimandi believes this is merely a temporary phase as he continues his return to full fitness.
“Players coming back from a long injury usually have an initial burst of energy before hitting a plateau,” Grimandi explained in an interview with La Provence. “That’s exactly what’s happening with him, but I can see he’s regaining his physical power.”
Bennacer, who suffered a serious knee injury in May 2023 before dealing with further setbacks earlier this season, is still working his way back to peak condition.
His performance against RC Lens, where he was heavily involved despite Marseille’s 1-0 defeat, was a positive indicator of his growing influence on the pitch.
“I see him deeply engaged in his coach’s tactical plans, especially considering how often he was on the ball against Lens,” Grimandi noted.
“He had a strong start before fading slightly, but I thought his first half was very solid.”
Grimandi remains convinced that Bennacer will thrive at Marseille, dismissing any doubts about his ability to handle the pressure of playing for one of France’s most demanding clubs.
“He has Marseille in him, and the environment won’t be a problem for him,” he said. “I have no doubts about his success.”
Bennacer will have the perfect stage to prove himself when Marseille take on Paris Saint-Germain this Sunday, a match that could serve as a reminder of his undeniable quality.
