Atalanta’s resounding 4-0 victory over Juventus on Sunday was a statement performance, but one of the standout moments came off the pitch when Gian Piero Gasperini embraced Ademola Lookman after substituting him in the 80th minute.
The Nigeria forward had just capped off another impressive display, scoring one of the goals that dismantled the Bianconeri in Turin.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Gasperini showered praise on Lookman, highlighting his growth from an individualistic player into a team leader.
“Lookman became a fantastic player when he improved his perception of the team,” Gasperini said.
“He wasn’t a bad guy, but he was more focused on himself. Now, he has made Atalanta great, and Atalanta has made him great. I am convinced he can be the captain before the end of the season.”
This marks a remarkable turnaround in their relationship, given that the two had a brief dispute last month after Lookman missed a penalty in a Champions League clash against Club Brugge.
However, the bond between player and coach now appears stronger than ever, with Gasperini seeing him as a future leader.
If Lookman continues this fine form, he could indeed be wearing the captain’s armband sooner rather than later.
