Ghana’s under-20 football team secured a crucial victory against Gambia in their second group match at the 2023 African Games held in Accra. The Black Satellites emerged triumphant with a final scoreline of 3-1, but their advancement to the next round remains uncertain despite the win.
After a draw against Congo in their opening group fixture, the young Ghanaians showcased determination and resilience as they faced off against Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
From the onset, it was evident that the Black Satellites were intent on seizing control of the match and asserting their dominance.
Ghana took the lead in the 12th minute courtesy of Musibau Aziz, who capitalized on an error from the Gambian goalkeeper to put his team ahead 1-0.
Despite their early advantage, Desmond Ofei’s side had to wait until the second half to extend their lead further.
Abdul Aziz Issah doubled Ghana’s advantage just four minutes into the second half, capitalizing on a rebound from the Gambian goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Buoyed by their commanding lead, the Black Satellites continued to press forward, creating chances and controlling the tempo of the game.
Although Ghana missed a penalty opportunity in the 75th minute, they remained persistent, ultimately extending their lead through Jerry Afriyie’s goal in the 89th minute, securing a 3-1 victory.
Despite the important win, Ghana’s qualification for the next round hangs in the balance as Group A remains tightly contested.
With four points from two matches, Ghana currently leads the group standings. However, Benin and Congo, each with two points following their draw, are still in contention.
The final matchday on March 15 will determine the fate of all teams in Group A. Various scenarios could unfold, with Ghana needing to secure at least a draw against Benin to guarantee their progression.
