Ghanaian coach, James Kwesi Appiah has successfully guided Sudan to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, achieving one of his key targets since taking charge of the Sudanese national team in September 2023.
Appointed as head coach of Sudan last year, Kwesi Appiah wasted no time in setting ambitious goals for his team. Alongside the goal of securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the former Black Stars head coach focused on leading Sudan to the 2025 AFCON.
With his strategic leadership and the hard work of his backroom staff, that goal has now been realised.
In their final Group F match, Sudan faced Angola, who had already secured their place in the tournament. Despite the tough opposition, Sudan only needed a draw to confirm their spot in Morocco, and they did just that. The match ended in a goalless draw, securing the crucial point they needed to qualify for the prestigious continental tournament.
Sudan’s qualification to the 2025 AFCON comes after a hard-fought campaign in which they finished second in Group F with 8 points. They finished just one point ahead of Niger, who placed third, and five points clear of Ghana, who found themselves at the bottom of the group.
Coach Kwesi Appiah’s success with Sudan has been hailed as a significant achievement, both for him and the Sudanese footballing community.
His tactical approach and leadership have revitalised the team, earning them a place in the upcoming AFCON tournament, which will take place in late 2025.
