The Ghanaian national team, the Black Stars, under the strategic guidance of Coach Chris Hughton, is gearing up with a determined focus on cultivating a winning mentality. With the tournament set to kick off in just four days in Ivory Coast, Hughton emphasized the imperative of instilling a warrior-like spirit within his squad.
Having qualified for AFCON for the 24th time, the Ghanaian selection, with its last triumph in 1982, aims to transcend past disappointments, including losses in the finals of 1992, 2010, and 2015.
Hughton, a seasoned coach with a keen eye on the aspirations of the Black Stars, stressed the importance of developing a winning mindset well before the tournament commences.
“Winning must be the mentality before the tournament,” asserted Chris Hughton, underlining the significance of mental fortitude.
He expanded on the idea, stating, “We have to play well,” emphasizing the need for the team to exude confidence and dictate the pace of the game.
“Things have to go the way we want them to, and we have to be very optimistic that we can do very well.”
While expressing optimism about the team’s capabilities, Hughton remained pragmatic, acknowledging that the Black Stars’ progress would be contingent on their on-field performance.
“How far we can go depends on how well we can perform. One thing I know is that this is a group of players who want to do well,” remarked the Irish technician.
He highlighted the determination of the players and expressed his reluctance to lead a team that doesn’t believe in its chances of winning.
Ghana recently faced Namibia in a pre-tournament test match on January 8, 2024, resulting in a goalless draw at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
This outcome sets the stage for the Black Stars to fine-tune their strategies and solidify their winning mentality as they embark on their AFCON 2023 campaign in Ivory Coast.
