Stade Rennais has secured the long-term future of Ghanaian defender Alidu Seidu, extending his contract until 2029 despite his ongoing recovery from a serious knee injury.
The club confirmed the extension on Friday, March 28, reaffirming its confidence in the 23-year-old, who has been sidelined since November with a torn cruciate ligament.
Seidu, who initially signed with Rennes during the 2024 winter transfer window, quickly became a key figure in the team with his versatility and defensive tenacity.
Integral to Rennes’ defense
Before his injury, Seidu had impressed with his adaptability, playing across various defensive positions, whether centrally or on either flank.
His consistent performances saw him earn the club’s Player of the Month award in both September and October, underlining his growing influence in the squad.
However, his momentum was abruptly halted on November 24 when he suffered a serious knee injury during a match against Lille.
The setback forced him out of action, but he has remained engaged with the squad while focusing on his rehabilitation.
A vote of confidence from Rennes
Seidu was originally under contract until 2028, but the club has opted to extend his deal by an additional year, signaling strong faith in his recovery and long-term potential.
Stade Rennais president Arnaud Pouille expressed his admiration for the defender’s character and leadership qualities.
“His smile isn’t just a facade; Alidu brings a great deal of energy to the club. On the pitch, he knows how to take responsibility. He’s been a leader since his arrival. We can’t wait, especially him, to see him play again,” Pouille stated on the club’s website.
Despite his time on the sidelines, Seidu remains an integral part of Rennes’ plans.
His determination to return stronger, coupled with the club’s trust in his abilities, sets the stage for an eagerly anticipated comeback.
