Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor has steered Gor Mahia to a historic 22nd Kenyan Premier League title, sealing the championship with two matches still to play.
The title was confirmed on Sunday, May 24, 2026, after AFC Leopards suffered a 2-1 defeat to APS Bomet. The result left Leopards four points adrift with just one game remaining, while Gor Mahia still hold two games in hand—making their position at the summit unassailable.
Gor Mahia currently lead the standings with 68 points. Their Week 33 fixture against Mara Sugar in Homa Bay was postponed due to a court-related issue, but the disruption had no impact on their march to the title.
Akonnor, who took over in August 2025, has transformed the club’s fortunes with a strong technical team that includes assistant coach Bismark Kobi Mensah, goalkeepers’ trainer Ben Owu, and video analyst Joshua Kofi Boafo.
Ghanaian players have also played a key role in the success story. Enock Morrison, George Amonoo, Ebenezer Adukwaw and Ebenezer Assifuah were all influential throughout the campaign.
The former Black Stars, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach is now set to lead Gor Mahia into next season’s CAF Champions League.
