Ghana reappoint Carlos Queiroz to lead Black Stars into new era

Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed as Ghana head coach after the former Bafana Bafana boss initially left the Black Stars following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that Queiroz will return to lead the national team into the next stage of its programme, with the upcoming qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations set to mark the beginning of his new mandate.

Queiroz’s previous spell in charge ended shortly after Ghana’s World Cup campaign. However, following discussions involving the coach, the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, an agreement was reached for the Portuguese manager to resume his role with the national side.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme,: the GFA stated.

The association said the new appointment would begin with the next international window, as Ghana prepare to turn their attention to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Queiroz’s earlier mandate had included taking Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars began that tournament with a 1-0 victory over Panama before drawing 0-0 with England.

A 2-1 defeat by Croatia left Ghana third in their group, but they still progressed to the knockout stages. Their campaign ended with elimination by Colombia.

Despite that conclusion, the GFA has opted to restore Queiroz to the position as the team prepares for its next competitive challenge. The association pointed to his international background and familiarity with the Black Stars as key factors behind the decision.

“Queiroz’s previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, concluded a few weeks ago. Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window.

“The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter.

“Further details on the new mandate and the Black Stars’ upcoming programme will be announced in due course, as the GFA and Coach Queiroz turn their focus to building a successful new phase for Ghana on the international stage.”

The GFA did not provide further details about the length or specific terms of Queiroz’s renewed appointment. It said more information about his mandate and Ghana’s forthcoming schedule would be released in due course.

His immediate focus will be preparing the Black Stars for the next international window and the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, following his return to the Ghana post.
