Ghana Premier League back with a bang: Medeama defend crown as Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak launch title assault

The Ghana Premier League returns this weekend as the 2026/27 season kicks off on September 5, with 18 clubs preparing for a fresh battle for domestic supremacy.

Defending champions Medeama SC will begin their title defence with the pressure of expectation firmly on their shoulders, while traditional heavyweights Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have rebuilt their squads with hopes of ending the champions’ reign.

The new season has already generated significant anticipation, with clubs making major moves in the transfer market, changing coaches and promoting emerging talents who could become the next stars of Ghanaian football.

With established names and ambitious newcomers set to share the stage, the campaign promises another fiercely contested race at the top and a fascinating battle for survival at the bottom.

Medeama target back-to-back titles

Medeama have opted for continuity by retaining Head Coach Tanko Ibrahim, who masterminded their championship-winning campaign last season.

The triumph was Ibrahim’s first Premier League title as a head coach and Medeama’s second league crown, following their historic 2022/23 success under Augustine Evans Adotey.

The Yellow and Mauves have nevertheless been aggressive in strengthening their squad, bringing in several players to improve their chances of retaining the championship.

Among their notable recruits are Heart of Lions midfielder Etse Dogli, Nations FC attacker Emmanuel Annor, Hohoe United captain Usman Safianu and Dreams FC right-back Ebenezer Adade.

Karela United centre-back Abdul Rahman Yaya and Eleven Wonders midfielder Emmanuel Boateng have also joined the champions as Medeama seek to build a squad capable of handling the demands of another title campaign.

Hearts rebuild under Kapor

Hearts of Oak begin another campaign determined to restore the club to its traditional position among Ghana’s elite.

The Phobians have appointed Nebojša Kapor as head coach, handing the Serbian the responsibility of leading a major rebuilding exercise.

The Accra giants have added Abdul Aziz from Swedru All Blacks, midfielder Ebenezer Amoh and PAC Academy pair Rockson Kyeremeh and Manuel Osei Djan.

Caleb Koranteng, Alex Banso, Prince Amevor, goalkeeper Vicente Anane and Ivorian forward Mamadou Kader Kourouma are also among the new arrivals.

Dominic Nsobila and experienced striker John Antwi, who joins from Dreams FC, further strengthen a squad expected to challenge for major honours.

Tinkler begins Kotoko revolution

Asante Kotoko enter the season under new South African head coach Eric Tinkler, whose arrival has brought renewed optimism to the Porcupine Warriors.

The Kumasi giants have undergone a substantial squad overhaul, recruiting players from Ghana and abroad as they look to mount a serious title challenge.

Goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, Emmanuel Mamah, Ivorian Koffi Marius Ange Bini and Isaac Opoku Agyemang headline the domestic additions, while Burkinabe midfielder Abdoul Kader Tarnagda also arrives.

Kotoko have further strengthened their foreign contingent with Cameroonian Solomon Nsor Asaah from Fortuna de Mfou, Moroccan goalkeeper Abdel Wadie Mourad, defender Umar Ali from Partizani and DR Congo centre-back Aristote Tamuzi.

Ivorian winger Eric Gbetta, Emmanuel Sanja from Vision FC and midfielder Richard Boadu Agadas complete an ambitious recruitment drive.

Boadu brings winning pedigree to Aduana

Aduana FC have also made a coaching change, appointing Samuel Boadu to lead the club.

The experienced tactician arrives in Dormaa with a reputation for success and will be expected to translate that pedigree into another title challenge.

Aduana have reinforced their squad with Shawkan Hunalf Mohammed, Samuel Tenedu, Boa-At Regain and Emmanuel Abban from Bechem United.

Stephen Amankona, Abdul Latif Mohammed, Zakaria Fuseini and left-back Bismark Anim have also been brought in as the club prepares for a demanding campaign.

Young guns ready for their breakthrough

While the headline battles will involve the established clubs, the new season could also belong to a new generation of Ghanaian footballers.

Etse Dogli is one of the youngsters attracting attention after making his Premier League debut for Heart of Lions last season. His development from Banana Inn FC to the champions reflects the pathway available to emerging talent.

At Hearts, Alex Banso arrives from Nomoro FC after impressing during a loan spell at Ebony FC in the Division One League. His pace and attacking ability could make him an important weapon for the Phobians.

Swedru All Blacks left-back David Lartey is another youngster stepping up after his time with Dreams Chasers FC, while FC Samartex have secured Meshack Adjetey Sowah from Vision FC following interest from several Premier League clubs.

Berekum Chelsea goalkeeper Zulka Massawudu will also be keen to establish himself after choosing the club despite interest elsewhere.

For Kotoko, Emmanuel Sanja faces the biggest test of his young career after moving from Vision FC to one of Ghana’s most demanding clubs.

Then there is William Addo, who arrives in the topflight after finishing as the 2025/26 Division One League top scorer with 23 goals for Dormaa Unity FC. The major question is whether he can reproduce that scoring form against Premier League opposition.

With experienced coaches taking charge, champions defending their crown, giants rebuilding and a fresh crop of youngsters waiting to make their mark, the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is set for a compelling start on September 5.
