Ghana outclassed by Austria in heavy Vienna defeat
Ghana suffered a tough night in Vienna, losing 5–1 to a sharp and efficient Austrian side in an international friendly at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion.
The Black Stars, using this window to fine tune their squad for the 2026 World Cup, were second best for long spells but at least found the net late on.
Austria struck first when Marcel Sabitzer converted a penalty midway through the first half to punish a defensive lapse. After the break, Ghana’s structure crumbled as Michael Gregoritsch and Stefan Posch scored in quick succession to make it 3–0, reflecting Austria’s dominance in possession and chance creation.
Jordan Ayew offered brief hope with a tidy finish in the 77th minute, halting Ghana’s recent goal drought and reducing the deficit to 3–1. However, substitute Carney Chukwuemeka and Nicolas Seiwald added late goals, sealing an emphatic 5–1 scoreline and underlining the gulf on the day.
Despite the setback, these demanding tests are central to Otto Addo’s preparation plan, with Ghana next facing Germany in another high-profile friendly as they continue building toward the 2026 World Cup.
