Ghana held to 1-1 draw by Niger in AFCON 2025 aualifiers
Ghana’s search for their first win in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers continued on Monday after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Niger at the Stade Municipal de Berkane. Despite leading at half-time, Otto Addo’s side couldn’t secure the crucial three points, with a late equalizer from the hosts denying them victory.
The Black Stars took control of the match early on and looked the more threatening side from the outset.
After just three minutes, Abdul Fatawu delivered a pinpoint cross to Mohammed Kudus, but his header was comfortably saved by Niger goalkeeper Abiboulaye Hainikoye.
Ghana dominated possession in the first half, steadily increasing the pressure on the Nigerien defense.
Their persistence paid off just before the break when Alidu Seidu opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a stunning effort, marking his first goal for the national team.
Niger, however, showed resilience and created a few chances of their own, although Lawrence Ati-Zigi in Ghana’s goal was largely untroubled during the opening 45 minutes.
After the break, Ghana continued to push for a second goal, and Hainikoye was called into action once again.
He pulled off two key saves, first stopping Kudus on 50 minutes after excellent build-up play from Inaki Williams and then denying Williams himself just 11 minutes later, keeping the hosts in the match.
Despite Ghana’s control, Niger remained in contention, and their perseverance paid off in the 81st minute.
Moussa Moudou, who had come off the bench, made an instant impact by setting up Oumar Sako to score the equalizer, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The late goal left the Black Stars frustrated as they failed to hold onto their lead.
Ghana now faces mounting pressure as they look ahead to their next qualifier against Sudan on October 7.
With just two points from two games, Otto Addo’s side will be desperate to secure their first win and get their AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign back on track.
For Niger, the draw provides a much-needed boost, and they will be encouraged by their ability to fight back against one of Africa’s footballing giants.
Both teams will be looking to improve their fortunes as the qualifiers progress.
