Striker Asamoah Gyan, currently with Al Ain in the UAE, is set to make a comeback to the Ghana national team for the friendly match against China scheduled for Wednesday in Xi’an. This return follows Gyan’s temporary withdrawal from the national team and his announcement in June about rejoining the Black Stars.
Having taken a step back from the national team on February 18, Gyan cited being “psychologically affected” by two missed penalties during the 2010 World Cup and the CAN-2012. He sought the support of Ghanaians in his efforts to return, expressing his love for playing for his country and acknowledging the impact it has had on shaping him as a person.
Gyan, among the eighteen players selected by coach Kwesi Appiah, faced strong criticism after missing a crucial penalty in the final seconds of the 2010 World Cup quarter-final, resulting in Ghana‘s loss to Uruguay. Additionally, he missed another penalty at the beginning of the CAN-2012 semi-final against Zambia, where Ghana ultimately lost 0-1, and Zambia went on to win the competition.
In his press release published by the Ghana Federation, Gyan emphasized his psychological struggles and the need for a break to strengthen his mindset. Last June, he clarified his return, stating that his decision to withdraw from the national team was not final and was essential for him to take a break to fortify his mental resilience.
