Ghana coach Otto Addo has expressed his delight following the Black Stars’ emphatic 4-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the Unity Cup third-place play-off on Saturday.
Having narrowly lost 2-1 to Nigeria in the semi-final, Ghana delivered a commanding performance at the Gtech Community Stadium to end their tournament on a positive note and secure a place on the podium.
The Black Stars took control early, with captain Jordan Ayew setting the tone by opening the scoring in the 15th minute.
Nations FC midfielder Razak Simpson and Union Saint-Gilloise forward Mohammed Fuseini extended the lead before half-time, putting Ghana firmly in charge with a 3-0 advantage at the break.
The second half continued in similar fashion. Cercle Bruges’ Lawrence Agyekum, who recently completed a permanent move to the Belgian club, added a fourth in the 57th minute, rounding off a dominant team display.
Speaking after the match, Otto Addo commended his squad’s response to the semi-final disappointment and was encouraged by the hunger shown by several players.
“Overall, we’ve had a lot of positive responses. It’s important to look to the future, and I think some players have seized their opportunity,” he told reporters.
Addo also highlighted the strong performances by individuals who had not previously featured regularly in the national team setup, pointing to the broader value of the Unity Cup as a testing ground ahead of more crucial fixtures.
“They have performed very well, and we will definitely continue to monitor them closely. We also performed well in the recent World Cup qualifiers,” he added.
The coach, who returned to the helm of the national team ahead of the Unity Cup, emphasized his long-term vision and the importance of club form in future selections.
“We will observe their progress at the club, and as I said, I am very satisfied with what I saw today,” he concluded.
Ghana now turn their attention to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with Addo keen to build on the momentum generated from their strong finish in the Unity Cup.
The comprehensive win over Trinidad and Tobago offered a glimpse of depth and potential in the squad, as the Black Stars continue their preparations for more competitive challenges ahead.
