Ghana defender Daniel Opare announces retirement at 35

Ghanaian defender Daniel Opare has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a distinguished career that spanned multiple clubs and countries.

In an emotional message shared with fans and followers, Opare expressed his gratitude for the journey and the people who supported him along the way.

“A great day to celebrate, I couldn’t be happier for what the LORD has done for me throughout these years,” he wrote.

He credited his rise from humble beginnings to his faith, saying, “From where I started, only HE can raise a nobody like me to a position of recognition and fulfilment.”

Opare also thanked his family, friends, and loved ones for their unwavering support, particularly during challenging moments in his career.

“Thank you all for being there in difficult times and whenever I called, y’all never hesitated to show your love and kindness,” he added.

Reflecting on his club career, Opare praised the fans and teams he represented, acknowledging the role they played in his growth as a player.

Despite struggles with injuries and moments of doubt, he emphasised his dedication on the pitch, saying he always wore every jersey with pride, respect, and no regrets.

Concluding his farewell, Opare expressed his gratitude one last time and wished blessings for all who supported him.

“See you soon, and God bless you all,” the retiring defender added.

Daniel Opare leaves behind a legacy of commitment, resilience, and professionalism, celebrated both in Ghana and abroad.

He was part of the Ghana U20 side that made history in 2009, becoming the first African country to win the FIFA U20 World Cup.

He hangs up his boots having played for several clubs, including Ashanti Gold, CS Sfaxien, Real Madrid Castilla, Standard Liege, FC Porto, Besiktas, FC Augsburg, Lens, Royal Antwerp, Zulte Waregem, and  Seraing.
