Alan Shearer has weighed in on Alexander Isak’s desire to leave Newcastle United, stating firmly that the club should allow the striker to move on if he no longer wants to stay.
The former Magpies captain said the Sweden international should be sold for the right price and wished him well, insisting no player is bigger than the club.
Isak, who was born in Sweden to Eritrean parents, has made clear his intention to join Liverpool this summer.
After netting 23 Premier League goals last season, he has reportedly grown frustrated with Newcastle’s lack of European ambition and has not been involved in the club’s preseason tour.
Liverpool have already had multiple bids rejected, but are expected to return with a new offer before the window closes.
Newcastle have placed a £150 million price tag on the 25-year-old, and Shearer, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, said if the forward cannot be reintegrated into the squad, it’s time to cash in.
“If it really is impossible for Eddie to turn him around and he says no — and it sounds like that is the case — I want him to be out now,” said Shearer. “Get what you can and say thanks very much for the memories, off you go.”
The ex-England striker acknowledged the reality of modern football, saying while he understands Isak’s mindset, Newcastle must look after their own interests.
With Liverpool already adding Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, they are not desperate for Isak.
But Shearer believes Newcastle must act decisively — sell now and reinvest before the situation damages the squad’s morale and ambitions.
“If he doesn’t want to be there, fine,” Shearer concluded. “Get your big money for him and move on.”
