Gerzino Nyamsi has formally declared his intention to represent Cameroon at the international level, bringing to an end months of contemplation over his national allegiance.
Born in France and a former youth international with Les Bleus at U20 level, Nyamsi confirmed in an interview with Foot Mercato that he is now fully committed to playing for the country of his heritage.
The towering Lokomotiv Moscow centre-back revealed that all administrative steps have been completed, leaving him ready to respond immediately should he be selected.
“I’ve taken all the necessary steps. My documents are in order,” he stated. “If the coach calls me, I’ll join without hesitation.”
At 28 years old, Nyamsi has emerged as a dependable figure in the Russian Premier League, and his physical presence — standing at 1.94 metres — offers a potentially valuable asset to Cameroon’s defensive line. Yet his decision to commit to the Indomitable Lions was not based solely on footballing factors. Family ties and a deeper emotional connection to Cameroon played a pivotal role.
A recent visit to Cameroon in December of last year proved to be a defining moment for the defender. That trip, he explained, allowed him to reconnect with his roots and further fuelled his desire to wear the green, red, and yellow of the Central African nation.
Conversations with several Cameroonian internationals — as well as with Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) — helped to reinforce his decision.
Nyamsi acknowledged that those exchanges gave him insight into the pride and responsibility that comes with representing Cameroon at the highest level.
“Speaking with other players and understanding what it means to represent Cameroon really opened my eyes,” he noted. “There’s a strong spirit and sense of purpose around the team that I want to be part of.”
His declaration comes at a potentially opportune time for the Cameroonian national team. With World Cup qualifiers against Uganda and Equatorial Guinea on the horizon, newly appointed head coach Marc Brys will be assessing potential reinforcements to bolster his squad.
Nyamsi, with his experience and current form in Europe, presents a compelling option in central defence.
For Cameroon, who continue to blend experience with emerging talent, Nyamsi’s inclusion could offer greater depth and tactical flexibility. And for the player himself, it represents not just a career milestone, but a personal fulfilment of honouring his heritage on the international stage.
Whether or not he will receive a call-up in the immediate term remains to be seen. However, Nyamsi’s readiness is clear, and his message to the coaching staff was unequivocal: he is prepared, eligible, and eager to wear the Cameroon shirt.
As the Indomitable Lions prepare for key fixtures in their World Cup qualifying campaign, the door is now open for a new chapter in Gerzino Nyamsi’s career — one written in the colours of Cameroon.
