Gerzino Nyamsi has officially declared his intention to represent Cameroon at international level, ending speculation over his allegiance between the Indomitable Lions and France.
The 28-year-old central defender, currently with Lokomotiv Moscow, confirmed his decision in an interview with Foot Mercato, expressing a firm desire to wear the green, red, and yellow of Cameroon, should he be called up by head coach Marc Brys.
“Yes, some time ago, I was thinking a bit, it’s true. But now, I’ve been determined for a while to go, to be there if I’m called. So there you go, I’ve done all the paperwork, all that, to get my papers, and now everything is up to date. If the Cameroon coach calls me, I’ll be there, of course,” Nyamsi stated.
Born in Saint-Brieuc, France, to Cameroonian parents, Nyamsi previously represented France at under-20 level, earning three caps.
Despite his early connection to French football, including spells at Stade Rennais and Strasbourg before his move to Russia, the towering 1.94m defender has long felt the pull of his ancestral roots.
Nyamsi spoke with warmth and pride about his heritage. “It’s the country of my origins, my roots, my parents.My parents grew up there. I was born in France, I grew up in France, but then I was able to go there, especially last December. I have that culture which was still present at home,” he explained.
The decision comes at a significant time, with Cameroon preparing for upcoming friendlies against Uganda and Equatorial Guinea on 6 and 9 June respectively.

Head coach Marc Brys is expected to release his squad list in the coming days, and Nyamsi’s commitment will no doubt give the Belgian tactician another option to consider in defence.
Nyamsi also revealed that his choice was influenced by discussions with current and former Cameroonian internationals.
“Yes, I’ve already spoken with players who were in the national team, who have been in the national team, or who are currently in the national team. We talked a lot, and I asked a few questions. That also confirmed my choice,” he said.
He acknowledged having had conversations with Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation, a figure he admired during his youth.

With his paperwork finalised and his intentions made clear, all eyes now turn to Brys, who will have the final say on whether the former French youth international begins a new chapter with Cameroon.
