Gervinho credits Rudi Garcia bond for peak years in France and Italy
Former Ivory Coast international Gervinho has paid tribute to coach Rudi Garcia, crediting the French manager with shaping the most productive spell of his club career across Lille, Roma and earlier stages of his development.
The relationship between player and coach became one of the most enduring partnerships in modern European football, spanning multiple clubs and countries.
Garcia first worked with Gervinho at Le Mans, before guiding him through a breakthrough period at Lille and later reuniting with him at AS Roma.
“Rudi managed me at three different clubs: Le Mans, Lille, and AS Roma. It goes without saying that this shared journey created a very strong, almost special bond between us. He always knew how to handle me; he was the manager who, more than anyone else, managed to bring out the best in me,” Gervinho said.
The forward insisted that his best football came under Garcia’s guidance, describing a relationship built on trust and tactical clarity.
“Come to think of it, I played my best football under his guidance. It’s not just a tactical matter; it’s a relationship of trust. Even today, we remain deeply connected.”
Their time together at Lille proved particularly successful, with Gervinho forming part of a dynamic attacking unit that also featured Eden Hazard and Moussa Sow, helping the club secure a historic league and cup double.
Looking back, Gervinho believes the environment created by Garcia allowed him to flourish both technically and mentally, turning him into one of the most dangerous forwards in Ligue 1 before his move to the Premier League and Serie A.
The bond, he suggests, remains intact long after their shared journeys across Europe, underscoring a rare consistency in a career defined by constant change.
