Gernot Rohr defends inclusion of Jodel Dossou in Benin squad
Benin coach Gernot Rohr has strongly defended his decision to include striker Jodel Dossou in the squad for the November 2025 international break.
The squad announcement drew significant attention, with some names expected but Dossou’s inclusion reigniting debate among fans and journalists.
Rohr addressed the criticism directly at a press conference, expressing confusion over the hostility directed at the player.
He explained that Dossou’s selection reflects both recent performances and personal circumstances affecting the striker.
“Dossou made a family decision. With his wife hospitalized in Paris, he needed to move closer to home,” Rohr said.
The coach added that Dossou now competes for a strong club in the Paris region, which sits second in the league and is targeting promotion to National 2.
Rohr emphasized the professionalism of Dossou’s current environment, praising both facilities and staff.
“I observed some training sessions. They have excellent staff, high fitness standards, and professional structures, even a drone to film sessions,” Rohr explained.
The coach highlighted that these resources surpass those currently available to the national team.
Rohr insisted Dossou remains a valuable asset for Benin, capable of making a tangible impact on the squad’s performance.
“I get the feeling some people attack him without reason, despite everything he has already achieved,” he added.
Rohr underlined that Dossou possesses the quality to influence matches and contribute significantly to the team’s objectives.
The coach’s remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny from the media, reflecting the national spotlight on squad selection and player form.
Benin will rely on experienced internationals like Dossou to strengthen their squad during the upcoming international fixtures.
Rohr’s stance signals confidence in his decision, prioritizing both professionalism and on-field potential in his squad choices.
