German-Sierra Leonean Antonio Rudiger apologizes for throwing object at referee during Copa del Rey final

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has publicly apologised for his outburst towards match officials during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on Saturday night.

The German defender’s actions at the end of the high-stakes match led to his dismissal, along with teammates Lucas Vazquez and Jude Bellingham, after they protested a controversial decision involving Kylian Mbappe.

Rudiger, whose African heritage traces back to Sierra Leone, was sent off for reportedly throwing an ice cube from the technical area towards the referee.

In his report, referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea confirmed that Rudiger had launched the object, which missed him.

The incident took place during the final moments of a tense match that saw Barcelona triumph 3-2 after extra-time.

In an Instagram story, Rudiger admitted to his misconduct, stating that there was “no excuse” for his behaviour.

“I’m very sorry for that,” Rudiger said, offering his apologies to the referee and anyone he had disappointed.

His actions, however, have left him facing the possibility of a significant ban from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), which could extend up to six months if deemed an “assault on referees,” even if the incident caused no harm.

The red cards for Rudiger, Vazquez, and Bellingham further marred what had already been a contentious final for Real Madrid, who were left frustrated after conceding an extra-time goal.
