Bayern Munich have completed the signing of German centre-back Jonathan Tah on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Bayer Leverkusen.
The 29-year-old, who has Ivorian roots, has penned a four-year deal with the Bundesliga champions after opting not to extend his stay with Leverkusen, where he spent a decade and played a key role in the club’s historic 2023/24 double-winning season.
Tah becomes the latest addition to Vincent Kompany’s squad, bringing with him significant domestic and international experience.
He made over 300 appearances for Leverkusen and was part of the side that lifted the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal last season without a single defeat.
“I’m very happy to be at Bayern,” Tah said following the official announcement. “I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together.”
His move ends weeks of speculation linking him with top European clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Barcelona.
Bayern, however, won the race for the defender, who is currently with Germany’s national team preparing for their UEFA Nations League semi-final against Portugal.
“In Tah, we’ve acquired a player with international experience and quality who won’t need much time to establish himself in our defence,” said Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund.
Tah’s arrival comes as Bayern reshape their defence following the departure of Eric Dier to AS Monaco. The Munich giants are looking to build on their 2024/25 Bundesliga triumph, where they finished 13 points clear of Leverkusen.
With 35 international caps since his debut in 2016, Tah adds depth and leadership to Kompany’s backline as Bayern aim for renewed European success in the coming seasons.
