Geremi Njitap, the former Cameroonian international and president of the footballers’ union (Synafoc), has escalated the conflict by reaching out to both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA. The move comes in response to alleged incidents involving Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), and the unfolding chaos within the Cameroonian football landscape.
The simmering tension between Geremi Njitap and Samuel Eto’o, once comrades in the national selection, has escalated into a public dispute.
Disturbing revelations have come to light, with Geremi Njitap accusing FECAFOOT agents allegedly sent by Samuel Eto’o of orchestrating an attack on security personnel and the head of protocol in the locker rooms following the victorious match against Gambia during AFCON 2023.
Geremi Njitap, who had attended the tournament as a former player of the national team and a guest of honor of CAF, found himself poorly treated and disrespected.
In response to these events, Njitap has taken the matter to higher authorities, addressing a formal letter to Patrice Motsepe, president of CAF, and Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA.
In his communication, Njitap urges both football governing bodies to undertake all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, signaling a call for potential sanctions against those responsible.
The plea for intervention from CAF and FIFA aligns with the ongoing controversies surrounding Samuel Eto’o, who is already under scrutiny for allegations related to match-fixing, involvement in sports betting, as well as threats and violence.
As the football crisis in Cameroon continues to unfold, Njitap’s appeal seeks to bring a sense of accountability and stability to a football landscape marred by internal strife and external scrutiny.
