Genoa’s Patrick Vieira reflects on future plans and Key loan players Maxwel Cornet and Jean Onana

Genoa’s Patrick Vieira reflects on future plans and Key loan players Maxwel Cornet and Jean Onana

Patrick Vieira has underlined his long-term vision for Genoa as the Italian club prepares for a pivotal off-season, placing emphasis on continuity and the possible retention of several key players, including loanees Maxwel Cornet and Jean Onana.

Speaking ahead of Genoa’s upcoming clash with Bologna, the French manager made clear his desire to preserve the core of the squad that he has worked with in recent months.

“Stability is what I’m aiming for,” Vieira said, repeating the word with measured determination. “I would like to keep all the players I’ve had recently, even though I’m aware that won’t be entirely possible.”

Vieira, who has been linked in recent weeks with a potential move to a club in the capital, appears committed to remaining in Liguria. According to the coach, discussions are ongoing with the Genoa hierarchy regarding preparations for the next campaign, as the club seeks to consolidate its position and build further under his leadership.

Among the players whose futures remain uncertain are Ivorian winger Maxwel Cornet and Cameroonian midfielder Jean Onana. Both have been on loan this season — Cornet from Premier League side West Ham United, and Onana from Turkish club Besiktas — and both have made a significant impression under Vieira.

Cornet, who arrived in Italy seeking more playing time after a challenging spell in England, has drawn interest for his pace and versatility. Talks are continuing between Genoa and West Ham in a bid to secure a permanent deal for the former Lyon and Burnley player. While details remain undisclosed, the negotiations reflect Genoa’s intent to retain talent that has contributed meaningfully throughout the campaign.

Onana’s situation is equally pressing. The 24-year-old, who had struggled for consistent minutes earlier in the season, recently earned Vieira’s trust with a full 90-minute performance.

“It was the first time he played the whole match,” Vieira remarked. “He still needs more rhythm, but he has shown his strength and technical ability. He’s a player who recovers possession well and brings balance to the team.”

Despite injury setbacks earlier in the season that limited Onana’s contributions, Vieira’s assessment of the midfielder has been positive.

The club is now evaluating the possibility of activating a purchase clause valued at €1.2 million. While financial considerations and his injury record will play a role in the final decision, Onana’s potential has not gone unnoticed.

The broader picture for Genoa is one of cautious optimism. Vieira’s first full season at the helm has brought about signs of progress, and the manager is keen to avoid the disruption that typically comes with the summer transfer window.

The focus, he stressed, must be on retaining the foundation already in place while making smart additions where necessary.

As Genoa looks ahead, the cases of Cornet and Onana will be closely watched. Both represent more than just short-term solutions — they symbolize the club’s approach under Vieira: a blend of patience, trust in development, and a desire for long-term cohesion. For now, the message from the manager is clear — Genoa’s journey is just beginning, and he intends to be at the heart of it.
