World Cup 2026: Idrissa Gana Gueye says Senegal focused ahead of France clash
Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye has insisted his side are concentrating on their own preparation rather than the reputation of opponents, as they build towards a high-profile World Cup 2026 opener against France.
The Everton player returned to action after nearly a month out through injury, featuring briefly in Senegal’s goalless warm-up draw with Saudi Arabia.
He came off the bench in the 83rd minute, replacing Lamine Camara, as the Lions of Teranga continued their preparations for the tournament.
Senegal begin their World Cup campaign against France, finalists at the last two editions and widely considered among the favourites for the title. Despite the scale of the challenge, Gueye struck a confident and measured tone when assessing the fixture.
Speaking to 221foot, he acknowledged the strength of the opposition but stressed that Senegal’s focus remains internal.
“The France is a great team. Finalist of the last two World Cups, it is among the favourites. But we are focused on our own team. We will do everything to represent Senegal and Africa with dignity.”
Gueye’s return adds valuable experience to a Senegal squad that is being carefully prepared by coach Pape Thiaw. The 34-year-old, who previously played for Paris Saint-Germain, brings extensive top-level experience to a team aiming to compete with the world’s strongest nations.
He also highlighted the importance of unity and collective preparation within the squad ahead of the tournament.
“Alhamdoulilah, we have worked to be ready from the start of the competition. We know we will need everyone to succeed.”
The midfielder underlined the ambition within the group, suggesting Senegal have belief in their ability to make a strong impact if they reach peak condition.
“If we are at 200%, we can have a very good World Cup. We will need the prayers and support of all Senegalese. It is only the beginning and every beginning is always difficult.”
Senegal face France on 16 June in their opening Group I fixture, with Norway also part of the group. The match is expected to be one of the standout ties of the opening round.
While France are regarded as one of the leading contenders for the trophy, Senegal believe they have the quality and mentality to compete, with Gueye’s message reflecting a broader confidence within the squad.
There is also a shared sense of ambition among senior players, with some within the camp expressing belief that Senegal can challenge for the title if performances align with expectations across the tournament.
