Brighton’s Gambian star Yankuba Minteh delivers promising first Premier League campaign

Yankuba Minteh is fast becoming Brighton & Hove Albion’s latest revelation — and perhaps their next nine-figure sale.

With his explosive pace, relentless dribbling, and growing maturity in front of goal, the 21-year-old Gambian winger is drawing comparisons to Moisés Caicedo, whose record-breaking £115 million move to Chelsea epitomised Brighton’s transfer brilliance.

Under Tony Bloom’s ownership, Brighton have mastered the art of scouting undervalued talent and selling at a premium.

Caicedo’s journey from a £4 million signing from Independiente del Valle to a British transfer-record sale remains their biggest success story.

Now, with Minteh’s electrifying displays, history could soon repeat itself.

Minteh’s fearless approach has made him a nightmare for Premier League defenders.

When Brighton hosted Chelsea earlier this season, he terrorised Marc Cucurella — one of the league’s standout left-backs — throughout the game.

Reduced to 10 men after Trevoh Chalobah’s dismissal, Chelsea were forced to retreat, allowing Minteh to dominate. His pinpoint cross to Danny Welbeck sparked a 3–1 comeback victory, underscoring his growing influence.

Statistically, Minteh’s attacking output is equally impressive. He ranks third in the Premier League for distance covered with progressive carries (852.3 metres from 63 completed), averages 13.5 per 90 minutes, and leads Brighton in several offensive categories — including most chances created (12), most successful dribbles per 90 (2.9), and most goal contributions (three).

Yet, what truly sets Minteh apart is his defensive diligence.

He has won 39 of 72 ground duels — the highest at Brighton — and registered 12 tackles, 29 recoveries, and six interceptions across seven league appearances. Such numbers illustrate a work ethic uncommon among attacking players.

After a modest debut campaign, Minteh’s current form suggests he is entering a defining phase of his career.

Newcastle United were compelled to sell him for around £30 million due to profit and sustainability rules, but his value has already soared far beyond that.

Liverpool could emerge as a potential destination, with Mohamed Salah nearing the twilight of his career.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s established transfer relationship with Brighton means they will undoubtedly monitor developments.

For now, Minteh’s focus remains on improvement. His best goalscoring season came at Feyenoord, where he netted 11 times and assisted five.

Replicating or exceeding those numbers in the Premier League would only strengthen his case to become Brighton’s next £100 million export — a player whose rise seems destined by design.
