Gambia coach Mariama Bom Sowe announces final squad for Women’s AFCON qualifiers

Gambia coach Mariama Bom Sowe has announced her final 23-player squad for the decisive Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Kenya.

The two-leg encounter will determine whether Gambia secures a place at the 2026 Women’s AFCON.

The first match will take place on October 24 in Nairobi, with the return leg scheduled for October 28 at Stade Lat Dior in Thiès, Senegal.

Sowe, who has overseen an intense preparation phase, finalised her selection over the weekend. She said the squad’s balance between experience and youth gives her confidence ahead of the crucial fixtures.

The team has trained rigorously in recent weeks, focusing on fitness, tactical discipline, and game management.

Gambia’s campaign has drawn strong local interest, as fans hope to see the Scorpions make their first-ever appearance at the continental tournament.

Sowe and her technical staff have worked tirelessly to build a competitive group capable of challenging Kenya’s well-organised side.

The 23-woman list includes key players who featured in earlier qualifying rounds and several rising talents who impressed during the domestic league season.

Sowe believes the players’ recent form and commitment will play a decisive role in the final outcome.

The first leg in Nairobi will test Gambia’s defensive strength and composure under pressure, while the return leg in Thiès will allow them to rely on regional support.

Both matches promise intensity as each side fights for a place in next year’s tournament.

Gambia’s Football Federation has provided full logistical support, ensuring the team is mentally and physically prepared.

Sowe stated that her players understand the magnitude of the moment and remain focused on making history for the nation.

If Gambia overcomes Kenya, it will mark a milestone achievement for the women’s game in the country, inspiring future generations of female footballers.
