Gambia has confirmed its 24-player squad for the upcoming U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where they will face defending champions Senegal in their opening match on April 1.
The squad features three overseas-based players: Alieu Drammeh from FC Barcelona, Sharif Touray from Fortuna Sittard, and Sebastian Harona Darboe of Grorud IL.
The inclusion of these foreign-based talents highlights Gambia’s ambition as they make their long-awaited return to the competition after a 15-year absence.
Gambia previously won the U17 AFCON title in 2005 and 2009 but has since struggled to qualify for the tournament.
Their return to the continental stage presents an opportunity to re-establish themselves as a force in African youth football.
Their group-stage campaign will see them face Senegal, Tunisia, and Somalia.
The highly anticipated clash against Senegal brings back memories of their last encounter in the WAFU Zone A semifinals, where Gambia suffered a 3-1 defeat.
The team will be determined to make a stronger impression this time around and set the tone for a successful tournament.
With a blend of local and international talent, Gambia will be aiming to make a deep run in the competition and challenge for the title.
