Galli urges Mastantuono to prove Fiorentina loan can benefit more than himself

Early doubts have emerged in Italy over Franco Mastantuono’s proposed move from Real Madrid to Fiorentina on loan, with former Fiorentina goalkeeper Giovanni Galli questioning whether the teenager is suited to the club’s collective style.

Mastantuono is expected to leave Real Madrid temporarily because of limited opportunities with the Spanish side. The Argentina international remains under contract at the club until the summer of 2031, but his lack of regular playing time has led to the possibility of a loan move to Fiorentina.

The prospect of the move has prompted a mixed reaction in Italy. According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Galli acknowledged Mastantuono’s considerable talent and the attention that comes with being a Real Madrid player, but said Fiorentina would need to be certain the player could fit into the team’s structure.

“Certainly, Mastantuono has a great appeal because he is coming from Real Madrid, but we must see whether he has the characteristics that allow him to integrate into a collective team,” Galli said.

The former goalkeeper’s comments focus on the role Mastantuono would be expected to play at Fiorentina. While the player’s individual ability is recognised, Galli suggested that technical quality alone would not be enough if the Argentina teenager is to make a positive impact in Florence.

Galli also referred to comments from Daniele Bertoni, who had described Mastantuono as a player capable of dribbling past opponents.

“Daniele Bertoni said that he is a player who can dribble. In an organised team, it is natural that you need a talented player capable of beating opponents, but he should not be a player who uses Fiorentina only to build his own career,” Galli added.

The former Fiorentina goalkeeper made clear that he believes the proposed loan should serve the Italian club as much as it serves Mastantuono. He said the player would need to arrive with the aim of improving the team, rather than simply using the move as a platform for his own development.

“Mastantuono must come here to develop Fiorentina’s level and make the team better, and that is something completely different,” Galli concluded.

Mastantuono, 18, played 35 matches for Real Madrid during the previous season. He accumulated 1,484 minutes on the pitch, scored three goals and provided one assist.

Those figures underline the contrast at the centre of the proposed move. Mastantuono has already made a significant number of appearances for Real Madrid, but the amount of time he has spent playing has remained limited, contributing to the possibility of a temporary departure despite his long-term contract.

For now, the reaction in Italy reflects both sides of the debate surrounding the transfer. Mastantuono’s status as a Real Madrid player gives the move considerable appeal, while his ability to adapt to Fiorentina’s collective demands remains a subject of discussion before the loan is completed.
